Tanya Fischer, born in 1973 in Doylestown, PA, and Michael Warnica, born in 1968 in Phoenix, Arizona, began collaboration in cast paper in 1997 with the intention of using this unique medium to create distinctive pieces of art and a recognizable style. They realized the potential of cast paper and infused the traditional papermaking process with innovative contemporary techniques.
Papermaking is a basic process used for centuries that has been expanded to include decorative paper collages and thin paper relief to resemble embossed surfaces. The artists experimented with this basic process and utilized modern techniques to develop a new, more sculptural form of cast paper.
Cast paper is an under-explored medium with no restricting guidelines, thus allowing creativity and flexibility, which, considering their backgrounds in two-dimensional art, seemed a natural choice for them.
Fischer has a BFA in painting from Beaver College in Glenside, PA, and Warnica majored in illustration and received his BFA from the University of Arizona, Tucson. As a result of their education in two-dimensional art, they were able to approach the sculptural medium of cast appear with an unbiased perspective and connect their interests in pattern and color with the dimensionality of cast paper to form a representational image.
Their contemporary cast paper has been well-received and is in many private and corporate collections, including The Luxor in Las Vegas, Bank One, and Republic National Bank in Phoenix.
Their cast paper also has been selected for juried shows: Artsbridge at Prallsville Mills, NJ; The Arts Chateau, MT; the Form, CO; and group shows, including Art One in Scottsdale, AZ.
