ARTIST STATEMENT
Holt McLean wants her artwork to pull people in and make them feel that what they see is familiar. The more they look, the more they feel like they have been there. She says, "I want to capture their attention from a distance and pull them into the painting. I know most people will not study the individual brush strokes, try to figure out how many layers went into the painting, or even think about how long it took to bring the image to life. I just want people to like what they see and feel comfortable with my work for many years. People should feel they are walking down a path or passing by the market, but mostly I want them to connect with the piece every time they walk by it. I thought I needed exotic places and iconic images to grab attention, but now I understand it’s more about the emotion, brush work, texture, and layering that draws people. I want my work to bring the audience pleasant thoughts and memories for a lifetime."
