Artist's Statement

My figurative paintings are inspired by moments in a woman’s life. The subject matter for my work usually derives from glimpses of a mother with her child, the mundane domestic duties of a woman’s day, the rejuvenating bath, or even the stolen moments of reflection.  The final drawings or paintings are executed from sketches and photographs I take for referencing the gesture of the figure or the natural lighting.   On many occasions I also refer to vintage photography.   The color palette and lighting are sometimes heightened to a dramatic level to create a certain mood.

I often find my inspiration on my morning walks and trips to the fabric store.  Birds, trees and even fruit find their way into my paintings.  Vintage wallpaper designs from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s like those of Charles Mackintosh, CFA Voysey and William Morris will often clad parts of these pieces as well.   My passion for fabric design and texture is as integral to my work as the subject matter itself.  I even try to marry the two by allowing the pattern of the background to spill over onto the figure.

With an affinity for all things vintage and a respect for contemporary design, I attempt to combine these elements with the use of mixed media.  It’s important to me to see the artist’s hand.  I want my mark making to be both aggressive and soft.  I want to show the layers of the making of the piece so I’ll often leave the original sketch showing and purposely not develop that area.   Often times I start with a sketch and paint back into to it with acrylic paint.  Along with acrylic and oil, I love to combine other media such as wood stain, metallic paint, and oil pastels to create a layering effect.
