 MARTIN, CATHERINE

MARTIN, CATHERINE

Catherine Martin's
Dreams Come True
by Star Sosa & Susanna Pantas

Catherine Martin's childhood dreams were to have a horse, to have straight hair, and to be an artist. At forty-nine years of age she achieved all of these dreams and more. She has a Tennessee Walking horse, a stylish hairdo, and she is an accomplished artist producing vibrant and exciting paintings.

Born in Hamlet, North Carolina, she moved to Wilmington, North Carolina when she was ten years old. Catherine painted her first oil painting at age ten and knew, at that moment, that she wanted to be an artist. Young Catherine took art lessons at “The Artist's Gallery,” which was located next door to the post office. She received lessons in the classical styles of charcoal, pastel, and oils from Virginia McQueen and Hester Donnally.

As an adult, Catherine continued to live in Wilmington with her husband Dan Martin. She spent the early years of their marriage working as an art teacher and as an artist for a small television station. After years of focusing on being a wife and mother, Catherine and Dan moved to Raleigh in 1990. Once there, she applied herself to her craft by taking art classes at East Carolina University, UNC-Chapel Hill, Meredith College, and anywhere else she could find.

In 1998, Catherine Martin finally became a full-time painter. She left her teaching job to concentrate on her passion for creating art, which she describes as “a very personal experience that comes from the soul and reflects her joy of life.”

Catherine Martin's painting technique is called “Ala Prima,” which means that once a sketch is completed, the work is finished in one sitting. “Once the brush is in my hand,” Catherine explains, it just goes...my work is very emotional.” While Catherine has experimented with a number of different mediums over her career, over the past few years she seems to have settled on acrylics, stating that “the acrylics allow for the spontaneity I love.” Her vibrant paintings exhibit confidence and a self-assured hand, while the quickness of her brush strokes add movement and life to the image.

Landscape and architecture are Catherine's favorite subject matter. Catherine draws inspiration from her travels to North Africa and Europe, especially to Italy and France. She loves to capture a unique glimpse of a house or building that shows its true character. Frequently, Catherine finds that using a skewed perspective helps her emphasize details.

Catherine begins painting by priming her canvas in a intense red. She then sketches her forms in purple. Upon examination of her paintings you'll see that Catherine uses the juxtaposition of light and shadow as a technique to capture light and shadow in amazing detail. The dark outlining of her forms and the hot accents of the underpainting define the vibrant and intense style of painting for which she is known.
