Carolyn Goldsmith was born in Gainesville, Florida, in 1943. She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, in 1963 and continued her studies in art at the University of Alabama, Huntingdon College, and The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. The artist now lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
“My work is an outward and visible expression of my inner feelings – the way I am able to relate to the world. One piece may express a great joy, another a sadness in my life – whatever I’m feeling at the time. These all have to do with who I am and my relationship to others and the world. I address our common struggle to make sense of our existence and our relationship with God.
My hope is that the viewer will find that my work triggers certain images, thoughts, memories, visions of the future and dreams. Anything that stimulates or sets our imagination into motion, both humorous and serious, can be of great use on our journey.
The exciting thing for me is that the response from each viewer will be different yet will come from that pool of emotions and symbols we all share – the tension between our individuality and commonality.”
