 PRINGLE, ELIZABETH CATE

PRINGLE, ELIZABETH CATE

Elizabeth Cate Pringle was born in Columbia, South Carolina and graduated from Sweet Briar College, Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In addition to art studies at Sweet Briar, she studied art at the University of South Carolina, the Richmond Polytechnic Institute, UNC-Charlotte with Maud Gatewood, and UNC-Chapel Hill.  She has exhibited in a number of places including the Durham Art Guild 24th Annual Juried Show (1978), a one person show at the East Gallery, Duke University (1982), a group invitational show at Sweet Briar College (1987), and the Durham Art Guild 34th Annual Juried Show (1989).  Her work is in private collections in eight states and was recently selected for the Third Annual Glaxo Traveling Show.

An intimacy with the land is an important theme of these paintings of well-loved areas of North and South Carolina.  There is an emphasis on the forms of the land and the trees and on observations of color at different times and different seasons.  The paint strokes seek to define the sweep of these fields and the rich features of their edges.
