Since leaving graduate school and going to Colorado in 1999, I have been in the pursuit of painting the effects that man and nature have on landscape. Now that I have moved to the Carolinas, I am painting areas in this region that strike a formal response. It sometimes may be because of color, light, or an interesting architectural shape.
I consider myself primarily a “painterly realist” landscape painter. I begin most of my paintings on-site and usually finish them in the studio. My primary focus in painting is trying to get a sense of light in my painting while using intense color and strong contrast in areas. I try to get a strong sense of emotion by using many different kinds of brush marks on the canvas. I occasionally use printmaking rollers directly on the canvas to get marks that are different from the conventional “look” of a brush. I am fascinated by what paint can do and what its limitations are.
I am inspired by many different artists, especially George Inness, Bonnard, and Edward Hopper. I am influenced by each artist for different reasons. Some inspire me because of their color use, sense of light, and mark-making ability; others inspire me because of their composition and draftsmanship. I try to integrate elements of their work into my own while keeping my own “style.”
